Here’s 5 tips to help you reduce the amount of gas you use and keep more money in your wallet:

#1: Keep your vehicle well-maintained. Basic repairs and regular maintenance – such as oil changes, air-filter changes, and spark plug replacements—will lengthen the life of your vehicle as well as improve fuel economy and minimize emissions. Just follow the schedule in your owner’s manual.

#2: Check your tires. Keeping your tires properly inflated and aligned saves fuel by reducing the amount of drag your engine must overcome. According to safercar.gov, tire air pressure should be checked at least once a month. But, you may want to consider checking your tire pressure more frequently in the instances of striking or hitting an object, or sudden change of weather from warm to cold. You can buy a tire gauge that is easy to use and small enough to fit in the glove box of your car.

#3: Don’t carry around items you don’t need. For every 100 pounds of weight in your vehicle, fuel economy decreases by one to two percent. How many times have you left things in your car from over the weekend and forgot about them all week long? Take unneeded items out of your car. Also, reduce drag by putting bulky items inside the vehicle or trunk instead of on a roof rack.

#4: Consider you brakes. Get the best fuel economy with proper car brake service and repair. Fuel economy can be affected and decreased by several brake system related problems. A good rule of thumb is to have your brakes checked every 6,000 to 7,500 miles.

#5: Keep track of your fuel economy. A drop in your vehicle’s fuel economy can be a sign of engine trouble. Keep track of your fuel economy by noting the odometer reading and the number of gallons purchased each time you fill up. To calculate your gas mileage, divide the number of miles traveled between fill-ups by the number of gallons purchased, so you can see how your driving habits are impacting your fuel efficiency.
